From 23:59 on Monday 12th September 2022 Covid response controls are removed (i.e. traffic light system, vaccine mandates, etc.) This means that managed quarantine and the wearing of masks (in most situations) is no longer required. This page is unlikely to be updated in future unless there is a significant increase in infection rates requiring Government intervention.

From midnight 4th March 2022 NZ residents returning to New Zealand who are double vaccinated and have a -ve PCR test immediately prior to travel are not required to isolate for 7 days on arrival. They are required to return a Rapid Antigen Test within 24 hours and on Day 5 /6. A positive test requires a PCR test to be carried out and home isolation rules apply.

Vaccinations: New Zealand has adopted PfizerBioNTech as the preferred Covid vaccination. 95% of the population are now fully vaccinated and almost 50% have received a third ‘booster’ vaccination.

Covid19 Timeline

9 August 2020: It is now 100 days since the last local transmission of the Covid 19 virus within New Zealand.

8 June 2020: From 23:59 on Monday 8 June 2020 the New Zealand Alert Level One is in place. This effectively allows free movement within New Zealand but access across the NZ border is still restricted.

14 May 2020: From Thursday 14th May (effective 23:59 on Wednesday 13th May) a staged Covid19 Level 2 has been applied – allowing offices to reopen and commercial activity to restart within NZ, with physical distancing processes in place. The New Zealand border remains closed until further notice.

28 April 2020: At 23:59 on Monday 27th April 2020 New Zealand moved to Covid19 Alert Level 3 – Restrict. The Level 3 Alert Level will last for two weeks before review. 

20 April 2020: The New Zealand Government announced that from midnight (23:59) on Monday 27nd April 2020 the Alert Level 4: Eliminate phase, involving a country-wide lockdown, would be relaxed to Alert Level 3: Restrict phase. This will allow a number of industries to start trading again (primarily construction, manufacturing and forestry) if distancing and hygiene rules are in place. The relaxation also allows more flexibility in local (community) travel.

25 March 2020 : At midnight on Wednesday 25th March 2020, New Zealand initiated the Covid19 Alert Level 4 – Eliminate. This means the country is in “lockdown” for a minimum period of four weeks. The Government has emergency measures in place to ensure “essential services” are maintained,  As individuals we are confined to our homes apart from “essential food supply shopping” and “daily exercise”.
